Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) form the backbone of Kenya's economy. According to a report by the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development, SMEs contribute over 45% to the country's GDP. However, navigating the tax landscape can be daunting for these businesses. Enter the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
Established in 1995, KRA is responsible for managing the country's tax system and customs service. Over the years, they have introduced various initiatives to streamline tax compliance for SMEs.
One such initiative is iTax, an online tax management system that allows businesses to register, file returns, pay taxes, and manage their tax affairs digitally. This not only saves time but also reduces the risk of errors associated with manual processes.
For SMEs with a turnover below KES 5 million per annum, KRA offers the Fidelity Taxpayers Programme. This program provides these businesses with simplified tax filing requirements and reduced penalties for late payments.
Another initiative is e-Sasa, a mobile app that allows users to pay taxes, check balances, and access invoices on their mobile devices. This makes tax compliance accessible even for those without computers or internet access.
By embracing these initiatives, SMEs can focus on growth while ensuring they remain compliant with Kenya's tax laws. Remember, a smooth tax compliance process contributes significantly to your business's overall efficiency and success.
