In the dynamic landscape of African business, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya are leveraging digital platforms like Lipabiz Technologies Ltd to boost their operations. This article sheds light on the importance of cybersecurity for SMEs and offers practical steps towards building a robust digital shield.
According to the 2021 Cyberthreat Report by Cybersecurity Ventures, cybercrime is expected to cost businesses worldwide $6 trillion annually by 2021. Kenyan SMEs are not immune to this trend. A study by the Communications Authority of Kenya revealed a significant increase in cyberattacks targeting SMEs from 2017 to 2019.
Cyber attacks can result in financial losses, data breaches, and reputational damage. A single attack can disrupt operations for days or even weeks, causing significant revenue loss. Additionally, the cost of recovering from a cyberattack can be steep, with an average cost of $200,000 for SMEs, as reported by Hiscox.
Phishing attacks, malware infections, and ransomware are common threats that target SMEs. Lack of cybersecurity awareness among employees, outdated software, and insufficient security measures are some of the vulnerabilities that make SMEs attractive targets.
